This turned out to be the perfect background for years of restaurant work, where she discovered that cooking was her true art form. Deb calls herself a cook, rather than a chef &#8211; she did not attend culinary school, but learned her cooking skills at her mother&#8217;s knee, and on the job in restaurants. <a href=\"https:\/\/schoolwoods.com\/dinner\/meet-your-host-2\/portrait5-2-16\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-297\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-297 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/schoolwoods.com\/dinner\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/portrait5-2-16-234x300.jpg\" alt=\"portrait5-2-16\" width=\"234\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/schoolwoods.com\/dinner\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/portrait5-2-16-234x300.jpg 234w, https:\/\/schoolwoods.com\/dinner\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/portrait5-2-16.jpg 508w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 234px) 100vw, 234px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>She is interested in giving people the chance to experience well-prepared, home-cooked food, by cooking for them, and\/or teaching them to cook themselves. She&#8217;s not as interested in pushing food to the heighths of up-to-the minute chefery, like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldcat.org\/oclc\/183392359\">cooking sous-vide<\/a>, gels and foams and mists, or any food that comes on a <a href=\"http:\/\/crucialdetail.com\/collections\/the-alinea-collection\">specially designed serving piece<\/a> (design by Martin Kastner for Alinea); she prefers to leave that <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Grant_Achatz\">to others<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Deb aspires to be like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.patriciawells.com\/\">Patricia Wells<\/a>, rather than <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thomas_Keller\">Thomas Keller. <\/a>(although she does have a slightly superstitious belief that had she not been born 10 weeks prematurely, in August of 1955, she and Keller would share the same birthday, in October)<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Let there be peace at the dinner table&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em>Al Shapiro<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Debra Shapiro grew up wanting to be an artist, and majored in art history in college.
