  • Shirred Eggs – baked in a cup with a splash of cream and sprinkle of Parmesan cheese, on a bed of spinach and ham (and some without ham those who don’t eat meat)
  • Hash brown potatoes
  • Big green salad – fresh greens, maybe asparagus, tangy vinaigrette
  • Baskets overflowing with breadstuffs – Rolls, bread for toast, muffins & scones
  • Eton mess – strawberries & cream with crumbled meringues thrown in – we’ll be using the UK National Gallery’s recipe – rated in the top 3!
  • Coffee, tea and juice

  • Something with asparagus, if it’s in – pizza, or dip
  • Fruit, some dunked in chocolate
  • Some nice cheese
  • Assorted small sweets – ginger bars, rhubarb bars, we’ll think of more

Here’s the menu, but expect some happy surprises!

  • Tea sandwiches – cucumber, olive-walnut, egg or curried chicken salad
  • Salads that make the best of winter produce – Wild rice, roasted vegetables and leafy parsley, and more …
  • Cheese board, with condiments – olives, relishes, pickled things; breads & crackers
  • Olives and Nuts and Crunchy things to munch
  • Fruit
  • Desserts – Nigella’s polenta almond cake (gluten-free); baby cheesecakes, cookies
  • Tea, sparkling & still water, and nonalcoholic beverages provided – feel free to bring your own “adult” beverages

School Woods announces the Sunday Supper series for winter 2013. Let Deb do the cooking – she’ll be preparing cozy, family style meals, that will be a bit more intricate, or at least more time-consuming, than what you might prepare for yourself!

Dates for the next dinners: February 10 and February 24. Cancelled due to low enrollment. You can still Click a date to see its menu.

Brunches will return on Sundays in March.

Sunday January 13th

  • Array of light appetizers – olives, nuts, vegetables
  • Hearty Italian greens and white bean soup, served with whole wheat baguettes and roasted garlic and olive oil for dipping
  • Broiled polenta with winter tomato sauce
  • Roasted broccoli
  • Winter vegetable slaw with toasted walnuts, raisins, and a citrus dressing
  • Assorted small sweets (That are incidentally relatively low-processed-sugar, and some gluten free – not to detract from their deliciousness!) dark chocolate dried fruit bark; chocolate-dipped apricots and crystallized ginger; Fruit – poached pears, clementines; small cookies

Menu for February 10

  • Appetizer: Filo samosas – traditional samosas have a pastry dough and are deep-fried; this version uses flaky filo leaves to wrap the filling of curried potatoes and peas, and are then brushed with butter and baked, served with yogurt & chutney
  • Main course: Braised chicken with garbanzo beans and curry spices
  • Cauliflower [or other vegetable] Curry
  • Dal – lentils and other beans cooked with Indian spices
  • Coconut rice
  • Naan – flat bread – topped with onion & sesame seeds
  • Dessert: Panna cotta – originally an Italian dessert – cooked and jelled cream – but here flavored with honey, rose water and pistachios

Guests should plan to arrive between 6:00 and 6:30 – there’ll be a few light appetizers and time for socializing. The main meal will be served family style (platters and serving bowls passed at each table) when everyone is present.

New Year’s Day 2013 Brunch

Join us for brunch at School Woods – to start the New year off right!
Brunch will be served buffet style beginning at 11:00 a.m., until 1:30 (ish – it’s a holiday – we’ll stick around ’til everyone’s ready to leave!)

Enjoy a last indulgence for the holiday season. We’ll be eating:

  • Hoppin’ John, the traditional dish of black-eyed peas & rice that is said to bring good luck. Ours will be a vegetarian version, and we’ll serve the fried ham on the side
  • Greens gratin – a mix of sturdy winter greens like kale, spinach and collards, in a creamy sauce, with a crunchy bread crumb topping
  • Scrambled eggs
  • Roasted root vegetables with herbs – potatoes, sweet potatoes, parsnips, rutabaga, celeriac
  • Winter fruit platter – or a big fruit salad
  • Cranberry cinnamon rolls & Custard Corn Bread
  • Coffee, tea, and orange juice (feel free to bring your own adult beverages if you wish)

Celebrate School Woods 6th anniversary by feasting on the foods of Fall!

Come by at 6:00 for drinks and nibbles (please bring your own alcoholic beverages), and sit down to a hearty family style meal when all of the guests have arrived.

  • Warm focaccia with dips & spreads (Eggplant caponata, Roasted red peppers, goat cheese with pesto)
  • Tomato & corn soup, broth-y & dairy free
  • Almond-Chicken or Broccoli-cheddar filo rolls (a filo-less version is possible for the gluten intolerant)
  • Honey roasted winter squash
  • Kale & greens salad – with dried fruit, sharp cheese, and crispy breadcrumbs
  • Trifle with fall fruits – crumbled cake layered with apple syrup and crème Anglaise, ribboned with pear, cranberry and apple sauce, topped with whipped cream
  • Served with sparkling and still water – feel free to bring appropriate wines or other adult beverages of your own

  • Ricotta cheesecake – a light Italian version of this favorite dessert

  • Fluffy scrambled eggs with cheese
  • Hash brown potatoes
  • Vegetable gratin – a mosaic of roasted vegetables (most likely the zucchini so ubiquitous this time of year) with olive oil & garlic
  • Sticky buns – topped with nuts and honey, with plenty of gooey cinnamon filling. There’ll be a gluten-free version, and we’ll leave a few nut-free, in case anyone’s allergic, or just doesn’t like nuts!

Join us at School Woods for a dinner celebrating the treats of early summer

The menu will include:

  • Roast chicken with a spicy-sweet chile rub
  • An assortment of hearty picnic salads: leafy greens, potato salad, wild rice salad with pea pods, cold sesame-peanut noodles
  • Basket of rolls with fresh local butter
  • Pan-grilled polenta
  • Desserts featuring summer fruits – Strawberry-topped meringue, Brown sugar cake with honey roasted rhubarb & pastry cream, all served with billows of whipped cream
  • Non-alcoholic drinks – iced tea, pitchers of cool water – will be provided – feel free to bring the adult beverages of your choice!
