Here’s the menu so far (subject to small changes, depending on the cook’s whims and ingredient availability)

  • Baked Brie with cranberry sauce
  • Scrambled eggs ribboned with leek confit & goat cheese
  • Hoppin’ John – a spicy stew of black eyed peas, celery, vegetable broth – some with ham
  • Greens gratin – assorted greens- spinach, kale, mustard – in a creamy, cheesy sauce with crunchy crumb topping
  • Sweet potato biscuits & corn bread with butter & jam & honey
  • Fruit platter
  • Small sweets – hazelnut truffles, marzipan dates, chocolate-dipped apricots, chocolate chip meringues – maybe a leftover Christmas cookie or two
  • Coffee, tea & orange juice

School Woods’ Seventh Birthday Autumn Feast

Sunday, October 20th, starting at 6:30 PM. Please plan to arrive between 6:30 and 6:45 – we’ll sit down to eat when all the guests are present. The main meal will be served family-style – platters and bowls passed around the table, so diners can help themselves.

The menu includes choices for poultry eaters, vegetarians and mostly-vegan.

  • Individual winter squash, cheese & tomato tarts – available in a vegan, no-cheese, version
  • Salad with honey-roasted pears, walnuts and reduced-cidar dressing
  • Long-rise baguettes with olive oil & balsamic vinegar
  • Choice of Herbed Tempeh steaks or Lemon-herb chicken breasts
  • Mashed potatoes with roasted vegetable gravy
  • Seasonal green side vegetable – greens, broccoli, beans – what ever looks best at the market
  • Cupcakes, including vegan chocolate, ginger cupcakes with cream cheese frosting, more flavors if there’re a lot of diners!

Midsummer’s Dinner

Drinks, appetizers, socializing – 6:00PM
Main meal on the buffet around 7:00PM

Come enjoy a sumptuous summer dinner, featuring the foods of early summer, served indoor picnic style.

To start: Have a drink, munch and mingle.
An enticing spread of appetizers: crackers & cheese, nuts & olives; dips & crudités.
We’ll provide the mixers, ice and glasses – please bring your own alcohol.

Mains: Served on the buffet when everyone has arrived.
A bevy of summer-y salads:

  • Leafy greens
  • Roasted potato & asparagus salad with hard-boiled egg.
  • Shrimp salad to eat plain or on a roll

Sliders! Shredded BBQ chicken or BBQ tempeh fingers, with coleslaw

Dessert: Stand up, stretch, and help yourself to sweets, coffee, maybe an after dinner drink.
Shortcake with summer berries – sweet cake with berries & whipped cream

Beverages: Served with pitchers of cool water, and iced tea & fruit juice blends. If you would like something stronger to drink with your meal, please bring it.

Mother’s Day Brunch

Join us on Mother’s Day for a very special brunch

Sunday May 12, 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

  • Shirred Eggs – baked in a cup with a splash of cream and sprinkle of Parmesan cheese, on a bed of spinach and ham (and some without ham those who don’t eat meat)
  • Hash brown potatoes
  • Big green salad – fresh greens, maybe asparagus, tangy vinaigrette
  • Baskets overflowing with breadstuffs – Rolls, bread for toast, muffins & scones
  • Eton mess – strawberries & cream with crumbled meringues thrown in – we’ll be using the UK National Gallery’s recipe – rated in the top 3!

  • Tea sandwiches – cucumber, olive-walnut, egg or curried chicken salad
  • Salads that make the best of winter produce – Wild rice, roasted vegetables and leafy parsley, and more …
  • Cheese board, with condiments – olives, relishes, pickled things; breads & crackers
  • Olives and Nuts and Crunchy things to munch
  • Fruit
  • Desserts – Nigella’s polenta almond cake (gluten-free); baby cheesecakes, cookies
  • Tea, sparkling & still water, and nonalcoholic beverages provided – feel free to bring your own “adult” beverages

Dinners en famille

School Woods announces the Sunday Supper series for winter 2013. Let Deb do the cooking – she’ll be preparing cozy, family style meals, that will be a bit more intricate, or at least more time-consuming, than what you might prepare for yourself!

Dates for the next dinners: February 10 and February 24. Cancelled due to low enrollment. You can still Click a date to see its menu.

Brunches will return on Sundays in March.

Sunday January 13th

  • Array of light appetizers – olives, nuts, vegetables
  • Hearty Italian greens and white bean soup, served with whole wheat baguettes and roasted garlic and olive oil for dipping
  • Broiled polenta with winter tomato sauce
  • Roasted broccoli
  • Winter vegetable slaw with toasted walnuts, raisins, and a citrus dressing
  • Assorted small sweets (That are incidentally relatively low-processed-sugar, and some gluten free – not to detract from their deliciousness!) dark chocolate dried fruit bark; chocolate-dipped apricots and crystallized ginger; Fruit – poached pears, clementines; small cookies

Menu for February 10

  • Appetizer: Filo samosas – traditional samosas have a pastry dough and are deep-fried; this version uses flaky filo leaves to wrap the filling of curried potatoes and peas, and are then brushed with butter and baked, served with yogurt & chutney
  • Main course: Braised chicken with garbanzo beans and curry spices
  • Cauliflower [or other vegetable] Curry
  • Dal – lentils and other beans cooked with Indian spices
  • Coconut rice
  • Naan – flat bread – topped with onion & sesame seeds
  • Dessert: Panna cotta – originally an Italian dessert – cooked and jelled cream – but here flavored with honey, rose water and pistachios

Guests should plan to arrive between 6:00 and 6:30 – there’ll be a few light appetizers and time for socializing. The main meal will be served family style (platters and serving bowls passed at each table) when everyone is present.
