New Year’s Day 2013 Brunch

Join us for brunch at School Woods – to start the New year off right!
Brunch will be served buffet style beginning at 11:00 a.m., until 1:30 (ish – it’s a holiday – we’ll stick around ’til everyone’s ready to leave!)

12/29: We’re full up at 11:00; if you sign up today or tomorrow, please plan to arrive at about 12:00 noon. Thanks!

Enjoy a last indulgence for the holiday season. We’ll be eating:

  • Hoppin’ John, the traditional dish of black-eyed peas & rice that is said to bring good luck. Ours will be a vegetarian version, and we’ll serve the fried ham on the side
  • Greens gratin – a mix of sturdy winter greens like kale, spinach and collards, in a creamy sauce, with a crunchy bread crumb topping
  • Scrambled eggs
  • Roasted root vegetables with herbs – potatoes, sweet potatoes, parsnips, rutabaga, celeriac
  • Winter fruit platter – or a big fruit salad
  • Cranberry cinnamon rolls & Custard Corn Bread
  • Coffee, tea, and orange juice (feel free to bring your own adult beverages if you wish)

October Brunches

There’ll be two brunches featured in October, on the 14th and the 28th.

  • Eggs Florentine – poached eggs on a bed of spinach, with toasted English muffins to slip underneath, and creamy Mornay sauce to drizzle on top – help yourself to make the dish as lean or rich as you like
  • Roasted autumn vegetables – potatoes, squash, sweet potatoes, parsnips
  • Rhubarb-Ripple Coffee Cake
  • Cranberry-apple-pear sauce/li>
  • Coffee, tea, and juice

  • Pancakes! Blueberry buttermilk, yeasted buckwheat, and a gluten-free variety as well
  • Eggs to order on the side – over-easy, sunny side up, scrambled

  • Coffee, tea, and juice

School Woods 6th Anniversary Harvest Feast

Celebrate School Woods 6th anniversary by feasting on the foods of Fall!

Come by at 6:00 for drinks and nibbles (please bring your own alcoholic beverages), and sit down to a hearty family style meal when all of the guests have arrived.

  • Warm focaccia with dips & spreads (Eggplant caponata, Roasted red peppers, goat cheese with pesto)
  • Tomato & corn soup, broth-y & dairy free
  • Almond-Chicken or Broccoli-cheddar filo rolls (a filo-less version is possible for the gluten intolerant)
  • Honey roasted winter squash
  • Kale & greens salad – with dried fruit, sharp cheese, and crispy breadcrumbs
  • Trifle with fall fruits – crumbled cake layered with apple syrup and crème Anglaise, ribboned with pear, cranberry and apple sauce, topped with whipped cream
  • Served with sparkling and still water – feel free to bring appropriate wines or other adult beverages of your own

School Woods announces this summer’s brunches – offered on random Sundays in July & August. You’re invited to enjoy brunch menus planned around the summer’s finest ingredients, featuring your favorites – eggs, potatoes, delicious bakery, fresh fruits and vegetables.

Dates: July 8, July 15 postponed – too much going on this weekend!, July 29, August 19 and August 26. Menus posted below as they develop.

  • Breakfast pizzas: bacon, egg & cheese for meat eaters, for vegetarians, a meatless version, topped with thinly sliced potato & cheese
  • Leafy green salad
  • Ricotta cheesecake – a light Italian version of this favorite dessert
  • Lots of fresh fruit
  • Coffee, tea and juice

July 15

July 29

  • Fluffy scrambled eggs with cheese
  • Hash brown potatoes
  • Vegetable gratin – a mosaic of roasted vegetables (most likely the zucchini so ubiquitous this time of year) with olive oil & garlic
  • Sticky buns – topped with nuts and honey, with plenty of gooey cinnamon filling. There’ll be a gluten-free version, and we’ll leave a few nut-free, in case anyone’s allergic, or just doesn’t like nuts!
  • Fruit salad
  • Coffee, tea, juice

August 19 cancelled due to low enrollment – come back next week!

Early Summer’s Dinner

Join us at School Woods for a dinner celebrating the treats of early summer
Saturday June 9th, 6:30 p.m.

The menu will include:

  • Roast chicken with a spicy-sweet chile rub
  • An assortment of hearty picnic salads: leafy greens, potato salad, wild rice salad with pea pods, cold sesame-peanut noodles
  • Basket of rolls with fresh local butter
  • Pan-grilled polenta
  • Desserts featuring summer fruits – Strawberry-topped meringue, Brown sugar cake with honey roasted rhubarb & pastry cream, all served with billows of whipped cream
  • Non-alcoholic drinks – iced tea, pitchers of cool water – will be provided – feel free to bring the adult beverages of your choice!

Mothers Day Brunch

School presents an extra special brunch for Mothers Day 2012!

Please Join us at School Woods on Friday April 27th, 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. for an evening of drinks, snacks, and pleasant conversation.

We’ll supply the appetizers, you supply the drinks. We’ll have non-alcoholic beverages, mixers, ice, glasses, lemons, limes & cherries – everything we’ll need.

The menu will include:

  • Crostini: Small toasts that serve as the base for an array of toppings: goat cheese & sun-dried tomato; lentil and chicken liver patès
  • Vegetables & spicey peanut dip
  • Sweet potato quesadillas with pepper jack cheese, sour cream & salsa
  • Nuts & other handfuls to munch
  • Small servings of dessert: flourless chocolate cake, little lime-coconut cupcakes, oat rhubarb jam bars
  • And more!

April 15th Brunch

Join us at School Woods for the first brunch of the spring season – we will cheat the tax man for a relaxing weekend, since returns are not due until the 17th this year.

  • Crepe gateau, a layered cake of crepes, filled with spinach, ricotta, and other cheeses
  • Roasted potatoes
  • Cranberry corn muffins and streusel-topped blueberry muffins (berries from my freezer – shown below)

Winter 2012 One-Dish Dinners

School Woods announces the return of one-dish dinners!

Hearty family meals, served buffet style, with a main course, salad or side dish, and dessert. There’ll be 6 dinners in the 2012 series, every other Thursday in January & February, finishing up with two in a row in March. Menus will be filled in below as they are determined. Soup, glorious soup (if there are enough eaters, we’ll have three soups; less people only two, but there’ll still be meat and vegetarian choices):

  • Beef and Beet Borscht – a meat & vegetable soup of Russian origins
  • Anna’s Cream of potato (vegetarian), chunks of potato & grated carrot in a creamy soup
  • Vegetarian curried lentil soup, a la Heidi Swanson [modified by deb]
  • Assorted breads: Cheese-stuffed, dill dip inside a dark rye
  • Raw vegetable platter to go with the rye & dill dip, above
  • Coleslaw
  • Apple pies and ice cream

  • Noodle casseroles: Turkey Noodle, Broccoli-Cheese-Mushroom Noodle

Winter Fancy Dinner

Pre-Valentine’s Sunday Supper – February 12th cancelled due to low enrollment

Enjoy a cozy Sunday supper with your special someone(s). Three courses, with vegetarian and seafood options. Arrive at 6:00 p.m. for drinks, a few nibbles, and general socializing, and sit down for the first course when everyone has arrived.
